I would like to share with you a summary of comments that I have heard from staff and parents regarding

the Academy for Leadership Abilities® (ALA):

    • ALA class is “different” in a good way from most of the academic classes students take.
    • There is a lot more “active” learning opportunities with ALA.
    • Many ALA students have shown a marked improvement in their other classes both academically and in attitudes that have been attributed to ALA.
    • ALA has greatly increased student’s confidence to be involved in activities and participate in their other classes. Many students have improved their public speaking and overall communication skills.
    • Students’ decision-making skills and abilities have improved.
    • ALA has caused better support in the school and in athletics for peers of different academic and socio-economic backgrounds.
    • ALA has provided many valuable learning experiences for students outside of the regular classroom setting.
    • There is a strong positive feeling for ALA within our school community. Keep up the good work!

Having met and worked with the good folks at Practical Strategies and the Perry County Board of Developmental Disabilities, I can personally vouch for both their commitment to serve their communities and their capacity to do so with excellence. ALA is the outcome of that commitment and capacity, and is a most excellent educational product. I highly recommend it as a means of educating both those with and without developmental disabilities for the betterment of our communities.

When you graduate High School a lot of things happen. You practically give up the life you live to live a new life that you think will bring you happiness. But happiness has some bumps in the road. Bonds with people fall apart, you don’t see the ones you love nearly as often and if you are a college athlete your schedules are tight and fall camp drains a man physically as well as mentally. I am one of those student athletes.

I enrolled at Ohio Wesleyan University in early spring knowing that I was embarking on something new and something completely foreign to me. But, I had a set of values that had been instilled in me through school and the Academy for Leadership Abilities® (ALA) program that made me feel comfortable with this dramatic change. ALA had taught me how things aren’t going to be picture perfect and things are going to get hard but in order to reach your goals and to be successful you have to fight, claw, scratch through the hard times to reach the top rung of the ladder. It taught me to do everything I can be to help my brothers to make them better as well as myself.

Without ALA, I wouldn’t have the values that I have today and I may not have had my first winning season in football in my entire life. I am forever thankful for what ALA taught me.

Leadership is one of the key foundations to success. Every day leaders are not only off pursuing their own dreams and creating their own goals, but they are inspiring and pushing others to do the same. I was one of the students that was fortunate enough to take part in the first ever ALA program at Miller High School.

I have had a lot of great people come into my life the last few years and inspire me to be my best, push myself and push others. ALA was one of the best opportunities I had in high school. ALA taught me failure leads to success and integrity is your best friend. We are going to fail in life, we are only human. When you fail, that does not mean you can’t bounce back up and chase after your dreams. Take something from your failure and make a lesson learned. Do it better next time. Push yourself and strive to achieve your dreams.

Integrity is your best friend and once you learn to accept that, you won’t fold under pressure or let other people make bad influences on your decisions. Do what you know is right even when no one is around to see. Be the person that makes a difference by doing what is right and making the best choice. Be a leader and prove to people that they can do something great with themselves and in society. ALA inspired me and pushed me to do great things. I am strong, I am brave, and I am a leader.

After working for over twenty-three years in the Juvenile Court system and working very closely with the Perry County Board of Developmental Disabilities, I would like to show my support to the Academy for Leadership Abilities® (ALA) program.

Perry County Board of DD has been working with this educational tool for the past few years in southern Perry County, and it has been very accepted and successful for the youth from the Southern Local Schools system.

I am privileged to show my support for the ALA program.  I hope and pray for the continuation of this educational/training program for youth with and without disabilities.

The task ahead is massive but, bit by bit, I’m sure it is going to be a catalyzer for change.  As technology has shown us things do not have to grow arithmetically, things can grow exponentially…don’t underestimate your baby steps…one of them can make the change happen faster.

I respect and admire what you are doing for the kids and the younger generation.

My entire forty-year career has been devoted to the field of emergency services.  The nature of this business is continual training to stay prepared for the events that we respond to in real life.

Because of my lifetime of receiving and teaching the qualities required of public service professionals, I have studied the Academy for Leadership Abilities® curriculum with a very critical eye.

The materials are straight-forward in the approach to teaching the value of personal morals, integrity, ethics and instilling a mindset of lifetime personal growth, regardless of the age or background of the learner.  Teaching techniques and supporting materials are complete and ready to use in any training environment, including at home.

I highly recommend Academy for Leadership Abilities® curriculum to anyone with leadership responsibilities.

I wish to pledge my support to the Academy for Leadership Abilities® (ALA) program.

Perry County Board of DD has stepped forward in our community and offered this program to those in need.  With great certainty, your efforts have been to reach those in need a give them the guidance and structure needed in their daily lives to function as successful adults in this ever so demanding world.

My support will always be there for this program and once again giving your agency the well-deserved praise for caring those not so fortunate.

Thank you so much for telling me about XXX’s speech today and for allowing me to sit in on it.  It was a wonderful experience for me and nearly moved me to tears thinking of how far he has come this year.  Your work (all of you) is remarkable and his social skills have skyrocketed.  It was so great to listen to him.  Thanks for granting me this experience.  It really made my day!

I am so glad that I was able to experience the great work you are doing here with our students.  I absolutely love and support what you are doing with these students.

I have been living and learning for 88 years.  Because I clearly understand the value of the principles being taught, and after studying the curriculum content, addressing and interacting with the Academy for Leadership Abilities® students, I am convinced this is a program that will enhance life’s learning process.

The starting point for knowledge is observation of “how” and “why” as tools to seek and find answers to analyze, understand and solve life’s challenges.  Investigating “why” is not enough. “How” is necessary to succeed. Persistence is needed to eliminate what does not work.  The right answer must be determined and used!

I endorse this training system and hope it expends to reach the entire world!

The Academy for Leadership Abilities® (ALA) provides a deliberate and practical approach to using all the resources of the school community – curriculum, the process of instruction, the quality of relationships, the handling of discipline and co-curricular activities.  Enlisting the total school environment, ALA affirms the essential role of the school in promoting and embracing leadership development among all school members.

I believe that ALA can assist youth in developing their fullest capacities in gaining the necessary self-confidence, skills, and attitudes to make a contribution to their school, workplace, and society-at-large.

ALA is not a leadership fad that will come and go.  It provides a purposeful, action-oriented approach to youth leadership in today’s challenging climate.

Academy for Leadership Abilities® programming has profoundly affected some of our clients. They have commented, “Wow, that really made me think,” and “It’s really hard but I know I need to face these things to make my life better.”

Most clients assigned to job search class face several barriers in addition to unemployment that further hinder their ability to achieve self-sufficiency (no high school diploma/GED, no driver’s license, felony convictions, etc.)

This program challenges individuals to face those setbacks and to think deeply about how the choices they make and the behaviors they engage in have impacted and continue to impact their lives.

I am truly impressed with the ALA curriculum and believe it is an important addition to our job search program.
